Overall I would go here again, I'm thinking it was an off night judging from the rest of the reviews. Hop Alley 3500 Larimer Street - Order Pickup and Delivery. We did eat it bc it was cooked so tender. If this wasn't a chicken dish over 20, I'd have easily given it a 4/5. Serving the rice in a takeaway container is cute, but also wasteful. Numbing and spicy flavor was nice, but also a bit one-note after eating the entire plate. I think the octopus made us the saddest bc it was cooked perfectly tender, but way too salty. La Zi Ji - 3/5 Chicken was cooked well, could have stood to be a little more juicy and tender. We booked this place specifically to try the a #5 Zi Ji Li - battered chicken - with fried schiuan, chili spice and the #3 Mala Octopus- 3yr aged doubanjiang, Merlot Napa cabbage Serrano green Sichuan vinaigrette. #4 Fried wontons - tabiko cream cheese scallions, duck sauce - nothing special, I ordered it bc my son is picky and wanted him to try something different - he would not try anything else. #3 Bone marrow fried rice - was great, but did order it without the peas and scallions for my son. I mean who eats Mapo tofu with out rice anyway. Still a little too salty, but manageable when you eat it with rice. Wings, tenders, and sandwiches on brioche topped with coleslaw and pickles round out the menu. But it was actually really different and delicious. But overall a good experience The dishes we got were the Beijing duck rolls, bone marrow fried rice, and la zi ji chicken. I’ll start with the best first - We ordered: #1 Turnip Cakes - made with lap cheong, Shrimp, black garlic, pickled turnip- I was hesitant to order this bc I imagined the dish you get at dim sum. Good food and sleek, fun setting Some of the dishes were very impressing but some were meh. I really wanted to love this place, but overall the food was way too salty. Our waiter was great, and the drinks were fantastic. But, really, as long as you’re working off the Chinese menu - as opposed to the American-Chinese list that you might be handed when you walk in - it’s difficult to go wrong.We were so excited to try out Hop Alley, and we were lucky to get reservations at the last min. A truly Chinese meal requires a side of vegetables we'd go for the garlic-spiked sautéed greens or the dry-fried green beans. ![]() Consider starting your meal with the tea-smoked eel, a Sichuan specialty that comprises fish marinated in, and then smoked with, tea and sugar or chilled Nanjing salted duck, a marvel of smooth texture and deep, meaty flavor. Heed her nudging: This strip-mall restaurant offers regional specialties from across China, but it’s deft at balancing tingling Sichuan peppercorns and hot chiles in dishes like the Sichuan-style boiled fish, in which hunks of white fish swim in a trough of angry-looking broth liberally flooded with chili oil. Ask your server for advice at Sunflower Asian Kitchen, and she may steer you rather forcefully toward the Sichuan specialties, especially if you indicate that you like spice. ![]()
